New psychology study provides insight into why religion boosts meaning in life (psypost.org)
"‘If God didn’t exist, then we would be just a cosmic accident. We would be mere specks of dust in the vast cosmic void, and there would be no significance to anything we do."
Social mattering = “My life matters to other people.”
Cosmic mattering = “My life matters in the grand scheme of the universe.”
When analyzing the source of people's total meaning in life, "social mattering" formed 25% of their total meaning, and "cosmic mattering" formed 75% of their total meaning.
If people become atheists, they will lose their cosmic mattering.
Therefore, atheism will cause them to lose 75% of their total meaning in life.
If this is true, is there a conflict between the true (atheism) and the good (cosmic mattering)?
How can atheism solve this gap so that we don't have to sacrifice goodness in the pursuit of truth?
