The Noosphere is like the collective unconsciousness of a society. It is the ideological landscape. Just like a geographic landscape has hills and valleys, the noosphere landscape has hills where the ideological polarization is. A unipolar landscape might have one hill - China's noosphere might suit this description. A bipolar landscape would have two hills. The American noosphere is becoming more and more polarized. The hills are getting taller and the valley deeper. Yet, another phenomenon is occurring, in that the American noosphere is turning into a multipolar landscape, where the right and left mountains are splitting into polar subsections.
Our ideologies are an attempt to understand reality and each pole represents one way to view reality. The multipolar aspect of our noosphere means that our society is functioning like a bunch of blind men feeling an elephant. Half of the population is feeling from the front, and half is feeling from the rear. Each perspective has an element of truth but is yet still missing the big picture.
As a society, we no longer have a grand narrative to unite our perspective on reality. There is a meaning crisis because no one seems to know how to evaluate truth anymore. The loss of a national narrative and a religious narrative seems to be causing us to revert back to a tribal narrative. This is exacerbated by feelings of loneliness and needing to belong.
We live in a dangerous time. Russia is playing an active role in funding extremist groups and injecting toxic messaging into our media to further stoke racial tensions in the hopes that we will destroy ourselves. All we need is the right crisis and it could trigger a chain reaction of instability. Instability could lead to vulnerability to a variety of existential threats, weather it be social, economic, nuclear, biological, satellite-based, laser, chemical, AI, genetically engineered, or other threats that we don't even understand. The aggregation of these potential threats could be termed a meta-crisis. We need to do everything we can to avoid instability that could trigger a meta-crisis.
So what is the solution? We need to fix the way we debate. The concept of the anti-debate and empathy circles might be helpful in restructuring the way we communicate our ideologies. We need to fix our news sources by actively prioritizing news that gives us a variety of perspectives, or seeking out long form discussions. Instead of choosing between the red or the blue pill, we need to go for the grey pill, the pill that accepts the unknown, accepts the grey area between ideological landscapes, that is willing to set aside biases and approach issues with a new perspective, that embraces a willingness to be converted to any perspective as evidence and logic direct, that puts truth first regardless of which side of the isle that lands you on, that has a desire to truly understand someone because you love them despite their ideology.
Perhaps the best way to implement this solution is via the formation of an embodied tribe. If people can get together and meet ideological opponents in person and discuss things civilly with the intent of growing closer, perhaps a new tribal mentality can be formed around the idea of unity first. Intellectual Explorers Club and Rebel Wisdom seem to be making attempts to organize events around this purpose.
